 Hello lovelies,

It's that time of year again. We come to the final page of the last chapter. I'd like to have a 2023 wrap-up of all the books I've managed to read over the previous 12 months. My goal for the year started at 40, but after some consideration, I moved it down to 25. 2023 was the year of realising I set myself up to fail a lot with unrealistic goals!

I didn't meet my reading goal once again; it's annoying, but it's clear that I am setting my goals too high. So, next year, I will put my reading goal to the same number of books I read this year, a grand total of 21.

Books I have read in 2023, with ratings:

  • Song of the Forever Rains by E.J Mellow ★★★★★
  • Hiding in Plain Sight by Eoghan Egan ★★★★☆
  • Chilling Adventures of Sabrina #2 by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa ★★★★★
  • The Moon is a Lesbian by Lauren A McDonald (cheeky self-mention)
  • The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling ★★★★☆
  • Saving the Star by Rachel Bowdler ★★★★★
  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ★★★★☆
  • Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston  ★★★★★
  • Lights, Planets, People! by Molly Naylor ★★★★☆
  • Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ★★★★☆
  • Dirty Laundry by Roxanne Emery & Richard Pink ★★★★★
  • Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May  ★★☆☆☆
  • The Little Mermaid by Hans Christian Anderson ★★★★★
  • Beyond the Wand by Tom Felton ★★★★☆
  • Girls Like Girls by Hayley Kiyoko ★★★★★
  • The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner  ★★★☆☆
  • Sex and the City by Candace Bushnell ★★☆☆☆
  • Dance of a Burning Sea by E.J Mellow ★★★★★
  • The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho ★★★★★
  • Pride: The Story of the LGBTQ Equality Movement by Matthew Todd ★★★★☆
  • Path of Night by Sarah Rees Brennan ★★★★☆
The books I enjoyed the most and stood out this year were Song of the Forever Rainds, Dance of a Burning Sea, Dirty Laundry, Girls Like Girls, and The Alchemist. These were my favourite reads of the year, for sure. I have read some excellent books this year, many of which I 5-starred.

Although I didn't mean either of my reading goals, I am glad I got to read some amazing books and be introduced to authors I didn't know before.  I’m not sure what book I’ll read first in 2024, but I’ll let you know!

2023 in Books

Sunday, 31 December 2023

Hello, lovelies!

It's been a minute since I posted about my reading journey, and it's been a rollercoaster.  At the beginning of the year, I set a reading goal of forty books, which I thought was pretty realistic. Six months later, and that isn't the case any longer. For the first five months, I only managed to read five books in total, and quite frankly, it left me feeling guilty. So, I decided to lower my reading goal for the year to twenty-five.

It feels much more manageable, and since setting the new goal, I've managed to read seven books. Having a more realistic goal has inspired me to read more, and I've been taking advantage of other reading formats like Kindle and audiobooks. I've been running out of space for books, so having the option of purchasing an e-book has been a godsend as it allows me to continue supporting my favourite authors and feeding my buying books addiction.

So far, I've read some pretty fabulous books this year. Not to list them all (we know I do this at the end of the year), but my favourite books I've read so far are:

  1. Saving the Star by Rachel Bowdler.
  2. Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston.
  3. Dirty Laundry by Richard Pink & Roxanne Emery.
These three books have been my reading highlights of the year so far! I'll give a little synopsis below of each, and you'll see exactly why each book was a spectacular read!

Saving the Star by Rachel Bowdler

Saving the Star is a sapphic romance between a bodyguard and a celebrity; it gives The Bodyguard vibes but is modern and very gay. Move on, Costner and Housten, we have a woman-loving woman romance on our hands!

This novella is short and sweet, and I loved every page so much that I devoured it in one sitting. We follow the two main characters, Beck and Atlanta, through both of their point of view. After a robbery of Atlanta's family, Beck is hired to protect her at all costs. We follow the pair escape paparazzi in Paris, attend glitz and glam events, and there's a car chase! This novella is packed with action, suspense, and romance.

So, if you're looking for your next WLW read packed with action and love, I'd highly recommend this gorgeous read.

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

This book has done the rounds on Tik Tok, Book Tok, and Bookstagram, and I can't believe it has taken me so long to read it. Why had I been putting it off for so long? God knows, but once I finally decided it was time, I had such a good time reading this book! Red, White, & Royal Blue is a love story between the Prince of England, Henry and the First Son of the President of the United States, Alex.

It's a tame enemies-to-lovers book, to begin with. We follow the pair as they're forced to be friends for the sake of their countries, and in this time, they become closer than ever. These characters' chemistry, romance, and story were enjoyable to read. The book is steamy, and at times I cried, laughed, and, in the end, felt all fuzzy inside.

If you're looking for a gay romance story between two guys with secret lovers, strong female characters, and an enjoyable read, this may be the one for you!

Dirty Laundry by Richard Pink & Roxanne Emery

Dirty Laundry: Why Adults with ADHD are so ashamed and what we can do to Help, what a book. First, I've been following Roxanne and Richard on Tik Tok and Instagram for a while, and their content is hilarious and relatable.

Roxanne shares experiences from her life and how ADHD has affected her over the years, and how when she got her late diagnosis, things started to just make sense. She shares some heartfelt moments and struggles, reflects on how a diagnosis has changed her life, and understands why her brain performs how it goes. Richard shares his thoughts and experiences of living with someone who has ADHD; he explains how different his thought process as a neurotypical person differs from someone who is neurodivergent. He shows his love and support and shares with us ways in which he helps his "ADHDer", which is insightful. Each chapter is broken down into different ADHD symptoms, and Roxy shares her experiences and how she copes, and Richard shares his side of the experience and provides useful ways to be supportive.

I'd recommend reading this book if you've got ADHD and if you've got someone in life who has. It's a great read; it makes you laugh, cry and, most importantly, understand!

It's about what you can read, not what you can't!

At first, I was slightly annoyed with myself for changing my goal, but now I know it's better to play it safe. Having high expectations sometimes do you more damage than good. So far, I've read a grand total of twelve books this year. It's a slow but steady process, but the main thing is to enjoy reading. Reading for the love, not for the goal!

So, for now, I bid you farewell! I'm deep into writing a novel and reading when I'm not writing.

Happy reading, bookworms!

40 to 25 & My Top Reads this Year So Far!

Tuesday, 27 June 2023

 Hello!

It's that time of year again when I reflect on all the books I've read this year. I managed to read a whopping 30 books. If you'd like to keep up with my reading, please feel free to follow my Goodreads. In 2021, I managed to read 16 books. I am really glad that I managed to surpass this and read more this year.

As the years go on, I consistently aim to read more. Why? I am a strong believer in that there is so much we can learn from books, and each book is a new opportunity to enrich our souls. So, naturally, for the year ahead I'd like to read more than I did this year.

Before we talk more about the books I'm looking forward to reading in 2023, let's talk about some of the ones I've read this year.

As always, I fit in my annual read of The Great Gatsby. A pleasant read every single time. My reading this year definitely expanded past this favourite which I'm really chuffed with.

Some of my favourite books this year:

  • The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling
  • Witch by Finbar Hawkins
  • Season of the Witch by Sarah Rees Brennan
  • Daughter of Chaos by Sarah Rees Brennan
  • Delilah Green Doesn't Care by Ashley Herring Blake
  • Purple Panties by Zane
I have been raving about quite a few of these books in various blog posts this year, and I'd highly recommend each and every one of them!

One of my resolutions this year was to buy more second-hand books. I think I could restrict myself to only a couple of new books purchased but I am determined to do better in 2023. I didn't quite whittle down my TBR pile, so some of the last year's will be seeping into my 2023 TBR list! I'm determined to finish The Morganville Series this year, I read the first six books and there are nine more to go.

For the year ahead I'd like to read more queer fiction, I read a few LGBTQ+ books in 2022 and quite frankly my brain (and heart) is eager for more queer romances!

I Read 30 Books in 2022

Saturday, 31 December 2022

Hello, lovelies!

Yes, you read that right in the title. A book tag. They were huge on YouTube and within the blogging community years ago, and quite frankly I'd love to see more around! So, I have done some deep research and found an Autumn-inspired book tag. I found this one on Books, Baking, and Blogging page! So, let's get started!

1. Are there any books you plan on reading over the autumn season?
Yes! I recently picked up a copy of Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, and Stephen King's IT. I'm starting the first one this week, and hopefully, have them both finished by the end of October. Other than those two, I'll be trying to dwindle down my never-ending TBR shelf ready for the new year!

2. September brings back school memories: what book did you most enjoy studying?
This is such a great question, I loved studying books at school. And that's why I continued to do it at Uni, so I have studied MANY books. My favourite book to study has to be Charles Dickens's Great Expectations, we did it at A-Level and it was such a brilliant book to analyse and read.

3. October means Halloween: do you enjoy scary books and films? If so what are some of your favourites?
Okay, so yes and no. I enjoy scary things, but they cause me severe nightmares. So, I have to keep scary things to the daytime because my brain can't handle these things at night. The best scary film I ever watched was The Descent. Unfortunately, I haven't found a favourite scary book yet! I did enjoy a thriller a couple years back by Helen Fields, it was called Perfect Prey and it was a detective story following a serial killer. I remember reading on a long train journey home at night and it really freaked me out. I am still very much on the search for a favourite horror book.

4. With November it’s time for bonfire night and firework displays. What’s the most exciting book you’ve read that really kept you gripped?
If you've been here a while this answer won't surprise you at all. But I stand by it every time, the Divergent trilogy. I love them with my whole being, no matter how many times I read them I am gripped. Every. Single. Time. Kudos to Veronica Roth for capturing my heart with this series.

5. What book is your favourite cosy comfort read?
Again, this will surprise no one but The Great Gatsby. I read it at least once a year, it's beautiful and heartbreaking. It will forever be my go-to book when I'm feeling a little out of sorts.

6. Curled up with a good book, what is your hot drink of choice?
This is a no brainer: a nice cup of tea. Just your simple British tea (Tetley or Yorkshire) goes down nicely whilst reading. If I'm about reading in a coffee shop though it's a latte, I have trust issues when it comes to other people making me a cup of tea.

7. Any autumn recommendations for other readers:

I haven't read many horror books but I do enjoy fantasy and anything witchy! Here are a few books I've read that fit the season:
  • The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling
  • Coraline by Neil Gaiman
  • Witch by Finbar Hawkins
  • Cunning Women by Elizabeth Lee
I really enjoyed doing this book tag, I think there will definitely be more on the blog in the future! Thank you for reading, and be amazing as ever. Stay tuned for a book review next week!

Autumn Book Tag

Friday, 21 October 2022

 Hello!

I thought since we're now into the fourth month of 2022, it's about time I  shared a reading update.

If you're new here, you might not know this but at the beginning of the year, I set a reading goal of 52 books. This works out as roughly 1 book a week.

I started the year off really well. However, I haven't been able to keep this pace in recent weeks. So, I am a little behind schedule!

I am 11 books into my 52 book goal! So, I am currently 4 books behind schedule. I've managed to do a great deal of reading over the bank holiday weekend and have many exciting titles coming up.

The books I've read so far are:
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone
  • The Ex Hex - Erin Sterling
  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
  • She Wolf - Rich Tommaso
  • Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
  • Witch - Finbar Hawkins
  • Medusa - Jessie Burton
  • Glass Houses (The Morganville Vampires #1) - Rachel Caine
  • Purple Panties - Zane
  • Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
  • Finding Faeries - Alexandra Rowland
I've enjoyed most of the books that I've been reading, witchy/fantasy books have been my go-to as you can clearly see.  So far, my favourite books I've read so far are The Ex Hex, Glass Houses, and Finding Faeries. My TBR list is still a long one but I'm confidently getting through the pile!

I've started reading the second book of The Morganville Vampire series. I am really looking forward to finally finishing the series, I had started them during my teen years and never got around to reaching book 15. I plan on writing a long-form blog post about the whole series, where I potentially rate and review each book in the series!

As for what's coming up soon?  I have some book reviews coming up that I've been eager to share. With more reading, I've found myself writing more too. I've got some exciting things coming up that I can't wait to share with you!

What have you bene reading over the bank holiday?

Reading Goal Progress Update

Monday, 18 April 2022

 Hello!

The final post of January, and it's a reflection of the books I have read over the last thirty-one days. I feel like I have begun the year with a strong reading month! It doesn't sound like a lot, but this month I have read a total of five books!! It's a good start to the year and I am confident that I will make my goal of fifty-two books. Below I have listed the books I have read and rated them out of five stars!

  • Harry Potter & The Philosopher's Stone - ★★☆☆☆
  • The Ex Hex - ★★★★★
  • Harry Potter & The Chamber of Secrets - ★★☆☆☆
  • She Wolf - ★★☆☆☆
  • Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban - ★★★☆☆
As you can see, my favourite book this month was The Ex Hex. I posted a book review for both The Ex Hex and She Wolf. In the picture, you can only see four of the books and this is because I was gushing over The Ex Hex to my coworker and insisted she borrow it!

I have loved that all of the books this month I have read have been from the fantasy genre. I've been loving all things witchy this month. I don't want to get too ahead of myself, but I think I am getting my love of reading back! Next month I plan on reading the below book:
  • Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire
  • Glass Houses by Rachel Caine
  • Witch by Finbar Hawkins
  • Purple Panties by Zane
I don't want to be too ambitious, so I am aiming for four books this month. I started reading Witch this week and I am a couple of chapters in and I am loving it. I cannot wait to finish it and share a review with you guys. I am hoping to share some creative writing in February too, maybe something Valentine!

What book are you looking forward to reading this month?

My January Reads

Monday, 31 January 2022

Happy new year!

The first post of 2022 is sharing a list of the books I plan to read this year, just to name a few off the top of my head. In case you missed my last post, I said I was setting myself the goal of one book a week. So, a grand total of 52 books for the year ahead. Due to side effects from the booster, I haven't been able to read a physical book this weekend but I did manage to listen to the audiobook of Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone and now I am listening to Chamber of Secrets.

I have purchased some of the books listed below already, they've been waiting patiently on my desk and it's been hard trying not to read them. Now we've entered 2022, I can't wait to meet all the new characters that live within the pages.

One of my 2022 goals is to make my reading more sustainable, so I will be trying to buy second-hand books as well as reading more kindle versions and audiobooks. So far, I have been loving purchasing books from World of Books, they sometimes have old books that are no longer in circulation! This website was a godsend during my degree, and last year I bought a few books from them I couldn't find anywhere else.  I am going to use this website more often, they've got books I haven't seen on shelves in years!

Here's a list of books I want to read in 2022:
  • Witch - Finbar Hawkins
  • The Ex Hex - Erin Sterling
  • Medusa - Jessie Burton
  • Girl crush - Florence Given (preordered)
  • The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes - Suzanne Collins
  • In At The Deep End - Kate Davies
  • A Witch In Time - Constance Sayers
  • Red White & Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston
  • It’s about bloody time period - Emma Barnett
  • Rough Around The Edges - Crystal Chard
  • Change of Heart - Clare Lydon
I am hoping to read more queer fiction, if you have any recommendations please comment below.

I am aiming to share weekly posts on the blog here, and hopefully, two of those will be book reviews! I am trying to write more creatively too, I am currently exploring self-publishing a collection of my poems. 2022 is looking promising. Once I am feeling up to reading again I will be starting with The Ex Hex from my reading list! What are you deciding to read this year?

Books I Want To Read in 2022

Monday, 3 January 2022

 Hello!

I don't know about you, but I love seasonal reads! There is nothing better than welcoming in a new season with a book that gives off all the right feels.

My favourite season is upon us: Autumn! I love the crisp leaves beneath my feet as I walk, the (many, so many) pumpkin spice lattes and all the spooky vibes this season brings us. I definitely feel my happiest at this time of year. As I write this I have a PSL to the right of me, I can see leaves falling off trees right outside the window.

I have a few books lined to read this Autumn, but I am always looking to expand my horizons. I have curated a list for you, showcasing some books I think would be perfect to read this season:

  • The Light Between Worlds by Laura Weymouth - I loved reading this book last Autumn, the cover is stunning!
  • Coraline - Neil Gaiman - perfect for a short spooky evening.
  • The Whitby Witches - Robin Jarvis
  • Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Comic series - Archie Comics
  • The Shining - Stephen King - perfect for those who like to scare themselves.
  • Frankenstein - Mary Shelley
  • The Bloody Chambers - Angela Carter
  • Pumpkin Heads - Rainbow Rowell
I'm enjoying my evenings with a good book, the wind howling outside. What do you plan on reading this Autumn?

 Hiya!

Sharing a little update on the books I have read so far this year!

I am still sticking to not having a goal for how many books I have to read. I thought you might appreciate a little update on the books I have been reading. I haven't had a lot of time to read but I am happy I have been able to do some!

  • I would leave me if I could - Halsey
  • Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - JK Rowling
  • Beneath the Waters  - Juliet Llewellyn
  • Next Exit Home - Dena Blake
  • Jack of Hearts - Lev A.C Rosen
  • The Green Mile - Stephen King
  • Persuasion - Jane Austen
  • The Great Gatsby - F.Scott Fitzgerald
  • The Seven Types of Spirit Guide - Yamile Yemoonyah

I am happy with how diverse my reading has been this year, delving into new genres as well as visiting old favourites.

I am currently reading Angela Carter's Book of Fairy Tales, and I am loving it so much. Every night I delve into a different short story, and it's simply divine. I read when I can, I think if I tried to force myself to read more I will end up with burnout and stop reading for a while and that is the last thing I want. I have just recently purchased some new books on my kindle:
  • Red, White & Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston
  • Period -Emma Barnett
  • A Witch in Time - Constance Sayers
That should keep me busy for the next couple of weeks! If not I have just ordered two books online which should come next week:
  • Coraline - Neil Gaiman
  • In The Deep End - Kate Davies

I think from the list the book that I enjoyed reading most was Next Exit Home, it was such a lovely read! I am on the search for more lesbian romance novels, if you have any recommendations please let me know.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

Reading Update

Saturday, 31 July 2021

Hiya!

I don't know about you but most of my friend's birthdays are near the mid to end of the year, so this is the time I start thinking about gifts and things they perhaps would like as well as something meaningful. Quite a few people in my friend group are booklovers, they are some of my favourite types of people to buy for! I thought whilst I am currently looking for their gifts I would write a post for you guys: 6 Tips for Buying Gifts for Your Bookworm Friends.

1) Your favourite book - I know this sounds a little odd but I personally love reading my friend's favourite book, not only does it make me feel closer to them but I believe it gives me more of an insight into their personality. It also gives me a chance to see what we both had taken from the book, did we like different parts, which character did we both relate to? I think it's a beautiful idea to get to know someone better.

2) Informed Book Purchase - have you seen the types of books your friend likes? Go hunting for something that they perhaps haven't read before, or if you have been out shopping with them did you notice they picked up a book that they seemed interested in but didn't buy? Maybe go back and purchase it. I have received a few books that my friends have noticed me looking at, and not only did I feel incredibly grateful and lucky but also amazed that they paid attention to what I was doing, it really meant a lot. Another way to approach this may be your book-loving friend has an amazon wishlist? That is always a good place to look for when searching for a book to buy them.

3) Book Merchandise - Do you know their favourite book? You could find gifts relating to their favourite book or character. Places like Etsy and Redbubble are amazing for finding bookish things such as badges, stickers, mugs, posters and the list go on. You will more than likely be supporting a small business along the way.

4) Gift Card - Sometimes it can be hard buying for your book lover friend, they have that many books and their TBR list is piled high maybe you're unsure of which book to pick. You could get them a gift card for Waterstones or other bookshops, then this way they can pick the books they want. They will appreciate being given the option. I know sometimes gift cards can come across as impersonal or not thoughtful so why don't you team this up with a little book date? Take your book lover for a coffee and hunt for a new book together.

5) Book Box Subscription - I have shared a few of these on my blog in the past but you can get a subscription or a one-off box of a book box. Usually, you get a book based on the theme with quite a few bookish goodies alongside it. It's fun and your book lover friend may continue buying them. You get all sorts of bookish goodies!

6) Write for them - This option is one of my favourites, it is a little more time consuming but as a writer it is fun for both me and the friend. You don't have to spend loads in fact this option is little to no cost. Is there a book or chapter your book lover likes or feels strongly about? Rewrite it, make it more suited for them or extend the ending to their favourite book. You could go as far as writing your friend into a scene, sort of like fanfiction but more personal to your friend. This is creative and plus which bookworm hasn't imagined themselves into their favourite novel?

No matter what you decide to buy your book lover friend I am sure they will appreciate it, all the same, after all it really is the thought that counts. My heart melts when anyone remembers my birthday, and I am sure they will be pleased you thought of them. Next week I have a post about my new job! Is there something that you think should be added? Please let me know in the comments!

6 Tips for Buying Gifts for Your Bookworm Friends

Friday, 16 July 2021

Hello,

This week I come to you with a post about the world of Bookstagram! If you're new here I have mentioned Bookstagram in a few of my posts but I have never really delved in deeper with it. I thought I would shed some light on the whole thing, just in case you were wondering.

Bookstagram, a whole online community you probably have never been aware of. Beyond the selfies and pictures of dogs, there is this community of book lovers sharing their favourite covers on Instagram. Bookworms are taking Instagram by a bookish storm, creating beautiful feeds as well as free advertising for novels. This new trend is bringing books to life all with a smartphone.  People all over the world take part in taking snazzy snaps. You can find hundreds of pictures under the hashtags #Bookstagram and #Shelfie. Search it.

The most important thing to remember, when taking Bookish photos or any photo really, is all about the lighting and the background. A bright room helps or taking a photo close to a window. It makes the photo look somewhat professional too.

Next step, find objects that compliment the cover of your book. I am no expert but I really enjoy taking photos of my shelves and books! Their especially good to use for book reviews and many of you know and will have seen them in previous blog posts!

The background to your photo can be anything, sometimes it’s the background that really brings out the book you’re photographing. I have used various backgrounds, sometimes it takes some planning and others I would just be carrying a book on me and the ideas just jump out at me.  It is always a good idea to keep a book with you, not only for reading but in case the perfect opportunity arises for you to get a snapshot. As a reader, I always have a book with me!

My favourite spot to take photographs is in coffee shops, it’s the perfect spot for reading as well taking aesthetically pleasing photographs. If you’re not one for carrying books with you, you can always take them in the comfort of your own room. For example, I took this photo on a chair with my favourite knitted blanket.

As well as make your Instagram look good, it also helps you keep track of the books you’ve been reading. I have found that wanting to take photos of books encourages me to read more books. I love seeing people take pictures of their books. Bookstagram has become like a community, a place people can express their love and opinions for a book!

Thank you for reading about a bookish love of mine, hope you have a fabulous week!

Hello!

This year I have been able to read a few books already, at the start of the year I decided to not set a goal as I didn't want to put to pressure on myself. I am currently reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. I read this book for the first time a couple of years ago and I just really wanted to reread it again. I am loving every page of it! I really enjoy the comfort of reading something you love, the pages and characters welcoming you back like an old friend!

Every and any bookworm has a list of books that they would like to read, I have a huge one in the notes of my phone but every time I look at it it scares me! I decided to narrow it down to books I would like to read in the near future.

I thought I would share this list with you guys:

  • American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis
  •  Swing Time - Zadie Smith
  • The Green Mile - Stephen King
  • Jack of Hearts (and other parts) - Lev A.C Rosen
I do have all of these on my bookshelf, this year I am trying to read more books on my shelf rather than going out and purchasing new books. These are books that have been on my reading list for quite a while and I want to tackle this list. Again, I won't be putting too much pressure on myself. What is currently on your TBR list?

Books To Be Read

Tuesday, 30 March 2021

Hello!

I saw this idea floating around and I just couldn't resist! I found this particular tag and set of questions on another person's blog, I don't know them personally I just loved this idea here is a link to their page: https://readingreadingreading.com/2015/03/25/coffee-book-tag/

I will be answering bookish questions this one is in relation to coffee, different types of coffee, which we all know I absolutely adore.

If you'd like to have a go in the comments or on your own writing platform consider this as a tag to you! Here we go:

1) Black Coffee: Name a series that's tough to get into but has hardcore fans.

This is a no brainer for me, Twilight. I tried to get into it but I just could not. I have this weird hatred for Twilight and don't really understand how people can enjoy it. I know so many people who simply adore this series, but I just don't get it. I think for me it's the sparkling vampires, growing up I was really into bad-ass vicious vampires like the ones from The Lost Boys or Queen of the Damned etc. and I am just in awe at the ridiculousness of the vampires in Twilight. At the time of this release I filled my vampire love elsewhere with Rachel Caine's Morganville Vampire Series- highly recommend.

2) Peppermint Mocha: Name a book that gets more popular during the winter or a festive time of year.

This is a tough one because I don't really read Christmas books myself, but I must say having worked in a bookshop I noticed the sales of Tom Fletcher's The Christmasarus rise around Christmas time and there is always an influx around this period since it's release in 2017. I bought it for my niece alongside the teddy, she loved it.

3) Hot Chocolate: What is your favourite children's book?

For this, I would have to say The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I read it again a year or so ago and it was just beautiful. As a child, I loved the idea of having a secret garden, the beauty of it. Such a wonderful book, with beautiful imagery and just an all-round good story.

4) Double Shot of Espresso: Name a book that kept you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The first book that popped into my head is Perfect Prey by Helen Fields. The first crime book I had ever read, and it was so damn good. I read it maybe three years ago and I still think about it.  I finished this book on the train home at night. So much regret, I was incredibly creeped out once I got off the train.

5) Starbucks: Name a book you see everywhere.

This is a good one, at the moment there have been a few books I am constantly seeing everywhere I am not sure if it is the universe telling me to purchase them or what but they are:

  • Sadie: A Novel by Courtney Summers
  • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
6) Hipster Coffee Shop: Give a book by an indie author a shoutout.

The most recent Indie book I have read would be Beneath the Waters by Juliet Llewellyn! I enjoyed this book and recently written a book review for it, if you want to check it out here is the link: http://www.writingmyheart.co.uk/2021/02/beneath-waters.html

7) Oops! I accidentally got decaf: Name a book you were expecting more from.

Studying literature we learned the importance of reading the classics and I had heard a few people rave about Virginia Woolf and her works. I thought I would give Mrs Dalloway ago, and truth be told it was entirely boring and somewhat pointless. I had expected so much more! I haven't given up entirely on Woolf, I do hope to delve into more of her work soon!

8) The Perfect Blend: Name a book or series that was both bitter and sweet but ultimately satisfying.

Weirdly, my answer is more or less the same as the person I found this tag from. Divergent series by Veronica Roth, I still remember the first time I read them and finished them sobbing my little heart out. It was so intense. I would also say for this question The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins would be a close second, it played with my heart like a cat with a toy! Both excellent trilogies I would recommend just have tissues near you.

--
That is the end of this Coffee Book Tag, what were your thoughts? I absolutely loved it! I really enjoyed writing about the books I have read and it was so fun to write this blog post! I think I would like to do more of these in the future. Thank you for reading, hope you all have a fabulous week!

 Hello!

This week I am here to tell you about an amazing website where you can read books online: Netgalley. I am in no way sponsored by the company, I have not been asked to write this. I just thought it would be useful to share, as I am constantly looking for new books to read. Some of you guys may be interested.

I discovered this little gem a couple of years back in University, I didn't really use it much at the time. However, more recently I have rekindled my love with it. It is a great way to discover new books but also to get into reviewing books! It helps provide feedback for publishers, plus you might find your next favourite book.

On Netgalley, you find books that aren't yet released or are exclusive. For FREE. You read them in an e-book format and/or e audiobook! It is very accessible. Which I think is amazing especially for it being free, it allows anyone to read and review books. There are so many categories to choose from such as Literary Fiction, LGBTQIA and even Comics & Graphic Novels. There so many more than I have mentioned, there really is something for everyone.

How it works is you sign up and browse to your own leisure and you request books to read very much like a library. It can take a couple of weeks to be accepted but it is well worth the wait. Once you are accepted you are free to read. You can also download their app 'Netgalley Shelf' this is where you can access all the stories you have been accepted to read. It is super helpful and can be downloaded to all devices. I have only requested a few stories so far just so I don't get too ahead of myself, this is what my bookshelf currently looks like:

I am really enjoying reading new books I probably wouldn't have found otherwise! I am currently reading Next Exit Home by Dena Blake from Netgalley, so far so good! You will be seeing a review next week of this book.

I hope you guys fall in love with Netgalley just as much as I have, I know a few people have asked me about reviewing books and looking for books to read to review and honestly this is a good way to go about it. You get to read and publishers get to hear honest feedback! It is a win-win for everyone. If you do check out Netgalley, please let me know I am super interested in what books you decide to request to read!

Thank you for reading this weeks blog post! I appreciate all of you reading my blog, it means the world to me. I hope you all have a fabulous weekend, see you next week!

Like many others during lockdown I have been loving a bit of online shopping! The mere joy of receiving a parcel and seeing a face that isn’t inside of my own household. I’ve been buying a range of cool things, if you follow my instagram you will see that I’ve been buying art and pop vinyls.
I have been loving the world of Etsy I have come across this amazing seller BookBestiesUK (you can find them on Instagram with the same tag) and they make book sleeves and covers.
I always carry a book with me no matter where I am going, and sometimes my books get scuffed and even pages bent (horrifying) and I’m forever wishing I could keep them clean all of the time. Until I found the page I never really considered a sleeve or cover but figured that it is such a smart idea. I decided to purchase three sleeves, pictured below:

I absolutely adore all of them! Two hard back sleeves for my bigger books and a paperback for my usual books! I fell in love with the Hocus Pocus one immediately! It’s my favourite of the three!
I don’t own a lot of Gatsby inspired things, which is odd because it is one of my absolute favourite books. I saw this on the Etsy page and had to add it to my basket. I was going to click purchase when I decided to have a quick neb on their insta page. This is where I saw the bright Harry Potter design that I just had to buy!
I’ve tested some books inside each and they feel safe and cosy! I can’t wait to be out and about on my way to a cafe knowing my book will be safe.  The quality of the sleeves are exceptional and you get your money’s worth. Each was £12 but I used a code for 10% off from one of the reps. I will definitely be buying some more in the future, next I’ll be purchasing a jacket I think. They do a range of designs from Disney to Literature.
I’ve been resisting buying more books, my to be read pile is stacked super high, but I wanted to buy something bookish and these sleeves are perfect! I’d highly recommend buying a sleeve, especially if you’re super clumsy like me! Or even getting one as a gift for a book lover. They would be just as chuffed as me!
What have you been buying online? I’ve seen people clothes shopping and other buying art like myself. Comment below and we have a natter!

Last Sunday I went out for my daily exercise and found myself snapping away at nature with the camera. The usually busy streets empty. Busy with blossoms and nature showing her true colours.  I set out with a book in my pocket and my soul in need of revival. Lockdown hasn’t been easy if I’m honest I’ve found it hard.  I needed a break. It wasn't far from home, but it was enough. I explored nature and fell in love with photography again.
I took a book out with me, I usually take a notebook but I have been trying to read more recently. I have been buying new books to be delivered and they have been contributing to my dissertation as well as my personal reading. I am trying to use books to go places if that makes sense?
The world is in a bizarre moment and sometimes it is difficult to understand and feel okay. These times are not normal so trying to make a normal can be challenging. Everyone is using this time for themselves and doing different things, myself I have been trying to take comfort in my books. Majority of which is in my student house and I could only bring dissertation books back home with me. With good old Amazon, kindle and audiobooks I have been trying to keep up with reading. I am working on some book reviews too, which I am excited to show you. Books have been the thing I am clinging to during this pandemic. What have you been doing to cope? If you're not coping so well please reach out.

Hello! It’s been a little while but I’m back with another graphic novel review,  I’ve taken quite a liking to comic books! The graphic novel I will be reviewing is The Wicked + The Devine by Gillen McKelvie and Wilson Cowles. This is the first book of the collection: The Faust Act. I believe there are novel versions of these if I remember correctly. So let’s begin! From the first page I was engaged, the characters are stunning and beautiful. Before each chapter there is pictures of each of the gods, and wow they are pretty.

The story is about gods who come to earth, every two years they die and sort of reset. In this collection we see a story unfold about the protagonist meeting these gods and a murder takes place that is blamed on one of the gods.

At the end of each chapter I was already excited for the next one. At one point there is such an amazing twist (I won’t say in case you want to pick this beauty up) that made me gasp out loud.

This was such a visually pleasing story, the design is amazing and the use of bright colours. Very refreshing for the eyes. This collection cost me £9.99, a very good prices for a volume. I believe the next volumes are already released. Volume two is called Fandemonium. I will be ordering on Amazon!

I really enjoyed this graphic novel, it is stunning and the storyline is gripping. I found myself laughing out loud and I just thoroughly enjoyed reading it!

What have you been reading lately?

The Wicked + The Devine Volume 1 (Review)

Hello!
I  was going to keep my blog bookish this year but I just wanted to write and share my recent obsession. I think this still counts as bookish.  I haven't been able to read much this month, it has been a super heavy month but I thought a nice chat would be lovely. As some of you may know from my Instagram I love my bookshelves, I love the way books look and I enjoyed making bookish displays and pictures. Queue some shelfies!

My current bookshelf

My last bookshelf

You will notice those little figures, and those are Funko Pop Vinyls. I have been collecting for a few years but recently something has been triggered in my brain. I went from 30 to 50 in the last month or so. I find them so adorable. I have expanded my range from Harry Potter to Disney, Game of Thrones and Stranger Things. One of my favourite Funko Pop Vinyl's in my Danny Zucko from Grease, my sister gifted him to me at Christmas. It made my day, I didn't even realise they did Grease Pop Vinyls. But this started my search for more, it's safe to say I have a lot saved in my wish list for the future.

I love how cute they look, my Instagram is spammed with them recently. Something about having the little characters around is just so adorable! I have taken a moment to chill but I just wanted to share some of them with you. I am looking into getting more characters from novels. I think that would make some pretty interesting pictures so like The Hunger Games and Alice and Wonderland. I think they would amazing. So far, the only book character's I have are my Harry Potter ones. They are my main collection and I love them dearly, it is nowhere near finished but I am so chuffed with all of them.
I am running out of space but I am moving (hopefully) into a bigger space in Summer and I cannot wait for my book nook.  Something about these figured I just feel drawn to. I cannot wait to expand my collection. Is there anything in particular that you collect?

A growing collection

Hello!!

I am opting in and out of book boxes lately, I kind of just buy the box with the theme that I like. This way I'm receiving things that I like and that I am a fan of. This month I received The Box Club's February box Magic Potions. This box is my favourite so far! Everything inside is just amazing!

This box was filled with so many cool things, from Harry Potter to Alice in Wonderland. Some of my favourite books of all time. It is clear that a lot of thought has been put into this box, I am obsessed with everything.

The book that came in this months box is Shadowscent by P.M Freestone. The synopsis for the book is: Escape to the ancient desert land of Aramtesh, a beautifully described fantastical world, where a poor village girl and a royal bodyguard are about to embark on an epic quest, led by their noses... Can Rakel's talent for fragrances lead her to the scent which will awaken a poisoned prince?

It sounds pretty cool, the picture doesn't do the cover justice. Now I have read the synopsis, I feel as though one of the items now makes sense. I was thinking it was a bit random but in fact, it goes with the
theme of the book.

To the left is in the item I was confused about. Dahkai Flower Rollerball Perfume by Suski Scents. It is quite a pretty scent, both spicy and sweet, not something I would usually wear but I will give it a go. I have been obsessed with perfumes lately, I still have the oils from my trip to Egypt, and they're the most stunning thing ever.

This is my second favourite item, I'll share my first favourite at the end of the blog post, the Alice in Wonderland Necklace by Literary Galaxy. It is such a cute piece, I love the glitter in the bottle as well as the little 'Drink Me' tag. I'm going out today, I plan on wearing this little gem as an accessory.
The next item is a badge, I actually thought this was a tribute to Pretty Little Liars. It is so adorable but it is for the book One of Us is Lying. I guess I am so used to the song from the opening credits of PLL.

I cannot resist a bit of chocolate, so I was more than happy when I saw this is in the box. This item is the Magical chocolatey potion by Kernow Chocolate. I especially love the logo of the company, it's very sweet and bookish.
There was also another badge within the box, I am not sure what the context is but it seems pretty badass. I really need to find a place to put all my badges, I have so many cute bookish ones and nowhere to display them.

The Apothecary bookplates by Book Box Clubs are so cute. I wouldn't personally put them into books but I would use them for notebooks. I love how magical they look, I love anything with a witchy vibe!

Last but certainly not least, here is my favourite item. I have used this every day since it arrived in the box! The Potions Master Take-Out Cup with Artwork by Fable&Black.
I love anything Harry Potter, this is such a perfect item. It reads 'I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory and even put a stopper on death' this quote is from the first Harry Potter book The Philosopher's Stone and it said by Snape. He is probably one of my least favourite characters but I am LIVING for this cup, I adore that is it reusable, I take it everywhere with me.

This box was such a brilliant box, all the items were cool and the theme was just amazing! I am not sure which boxes I am getting in March, I might switch it up and try somewhere new!

Febrauary Book Box (Book Box Club)

I have not been posting many book reviews this year, I guess sometimes I just don't feel strongly enough about the books I have been reading. At the start of the month I set my yearly Good Reads goal, this year I have set my goal to 50. Last year I set it to 25 but that was about midyear.  I have decided to do monthly reading updates over here on my blog, to share with you guys what I have been reading a few words on each book.

The books I have read this month are:
1) The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas
2) Sugar Rush by Julie Burchill
3) The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
4) Love on the Dole by Ray Speakman
5) A Midsummer Night's Dream by Shakespeare

Two of out five of the books are for plays, and two of the novels I read was for study purposes. I did a  book review on The Hate U Give at the beginning of the month, the link is here. All of these books were really interesting, I read the majority of them in one sitting.

The Hate U Give
A brilliant book, coming of age type of story. This book holds such a powerful message, this book hit every emotion possible. You follow a strong protagonist go through traumatic events, you see a story of racial hate and struggle. An eye-opening read. It has been a very long time since I fell deeply into a book, I couldn't walk away from it. I finished this one in one night, I was enticed by every single page. I cannot remember the last time that happened to me.
This book has been adapted into a film, I have not seen the film just yet but I am looking forward to seeing how similar it is/isn't to the book.
I would rate this book:
Overall:
Characters:
Plot:

Sugar Rush

I think this was my least favourite read out of all of them. I thought I would delve in further to the Coming of Age genre. I felt a little old to read this book, it is quite young and contemporary of its time. This book was released in 2001, and the culture and nature of the book is very of its time. I did enjoy that the book was set in Brighton, a city I have come to know and love within the last year and a half. I loved reading about the city in a fictional world. I admire the book is set in Brighton, I have been trying to use setting more in my own writing. This book is about a girl who changes schools, it shows you the contrast within the class system. The difference between private schools and public schools. I definitely found myself relating more to the working class aspect of the novel. It was a good read, but it definitely is for a younger audience than myself.
I would rate this book:
Overall:
Characters:
Plot:

The Picture of Dorian Gray
I have read this book many times, I think I even studied it at one point. It is such an interesting read, a classic piece of gothic literature. I read this piece for part of my coursework for my 19th-century Literature module at University. I compared this piece to Jane Eyre, about the topic of love. There are many things I could say about this book, it is beautifully written, I really like how the descriptions bring the book to life. I think what I like the most about this novel is the concept of never growing old, I love seeing Dorian become more and more corrupt. I love the theme of madness, the book is multi-dimensional in so many ways.
I would rate this book:
Overall:

Plot:

Love on the Dole
I read this play ready for semester 2 for my Twentieth Century Literature module. I am not sure what I was expecting, but I really enjoyed it. The majority of the books on my course have been set in a middle-class society, so this was a refreshing change. This play is set in a working-class society, and you see the daily struggles of having no money and people out of work. I found myself absorbed into the pages. It has a northern feel to is, it is set in Manchester. I enjoyed reading the accent, it felt real. As if I had just journeyed back up North. This piece was such a refreshing read, especially for something we are studying. I cannot wait to start to lecture on this one. I love reading plays, it feels like no time has passed at all. I liked how the story was based on characters and their lives, and how poverty and money can affect a relationship, and what extent people are willing to go for money. I read this one in one sitting.
I would rate this book:
Overall:
Characters:
Plot:

A Midsummer Night's Dream
I will forever love this play. I love the whole aspect of fairies and even Greek mythology. This play is short and sweet. I don't really care for the love tiffs between the mortal characters, I always enjoy the quarrels and happenings going on within the fairies. Puck is such a menacing character, loveable in every way. This play is just fun to read, light-hearted fun. I have read this one before, but I have been eager to read it again. If you just need a little pick me up,  this is a good play to read.
Overall:

Five books isn't so bad for the first month of the year, I do hope I read more as the days go on. I know I will have to read more for my studies so there won't be a lot of time for pleasure reading but I will try! The next book I will  be reading is the screenplay of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them!
